San Rafael Pacifics Ink Key Players
Core of the Lineup Returning for the 2014 Season
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Following the recent announcement that former league MVP and
reigning RBI champ, Maikel Jova, would be returning to the Pacifics as a player/coach
for the 2014 season, the team today announced that three other key members of the
2013 Division Championship team will return in 2014.
2-Time league homerun champ, Johnny Woodard; power hitting catcher, Matt
Kavanaugh; and last season’s field manager, Ryan Priddy, have inked new contracts to
rejoin the Pacifics in 2014, with Priddy signing on as a player rather than as manager
this season.
“I’m so pleased and excited to have back the core of our lineup,” said Pacifcs President
and General Manager, Mike Shapiro. “These guys are three integral pieces to the
success we had last year and, along with Maikel Jova, I’m fully confident we’ll be a
championship caliber team again this year.”
Woodard, a 28-year-old veteran, who along with Jova has anchored the middle of the
Pacifics lineup since their inaugural season in 2012, will seek to extend his homerun
title to a third consecutive year. The 6’4” Oakland native who signed with the Minnesota
Twins in the third round of the 2003 draft, has spent 8 years in minor league baseball, 6
of them in the Twins organization. Since joining the Pacifics, Woodard has hit .276 with
21 homers and 84 RBI.
Catcher Matt Kavanaugh will return to the Pacifics following a solid but injury-shortened
season in 2013. Kavanaugh, a Walnut Creek resident and San Francisco State
graduate, hit .297 in 38 games for the Pacifics last season despite a mid-season
hamstring injury that kept him out of the lineup for several weeks.
“I had Matt with me when I coached at Victoria in 2010 when he hit .315 and played a
solid defense behind the plate,” said Pacifics Manager, Dan DiPace. “I love having this
guy on my team to add a veteran presence particularly with all the young pitchers we’re
looking at.”
Following the untimely illness of Pacifics 2013 manager, James Frisbie, Ryan Priddy
took over the club in early June and led them to a league best 54-21 record. Priddy will
return to the club in 2014 where he started his 7-year career - as a player. The
Colorado native boasts a .275 career batting average and will be a key defensive
anchor for a newly formed Pacifics infield.
Shapiro added, “Ryan stepped up big time for us last year when Frizz got ill and we owe
him a huge thanks. I couldn’t be happier that he wanted to strap it on again for us this
year as a player and solidify our infield defense along with bringing a solid, veteran bat
to our lineup”.
In addition, the Pacifics announced that reliever Dan Rogers, a key member of the 2013
bullpen, agreed to terms and will be returning for the 2014 season. Rogers, who joined
the club via mid-season trade, appeared in 16 games including three starts and finished
the season with a stellar 4-0 record with a 2.64 ERA and 33 strike outs in 34 innings.
Rogers will forever be remembered for his debut appearance against the Hawaii Stars
when he struck out the first seven hitters he faced on only 28 pitches.
“I love having Dan Rogers on this team,” said Shapiro. “He’s a quality guy, he can start,
he can come out of the pen and he just plain gets hitters out.”
