News from F. Lofrano & Son, Inc.
May 19, 2014The Lofrano family consists of native second and third generation San Franciscans with a history steeped in tradition. This year we celebrate 40 years in business which is something we are sooo proud to say! The “F” in F. Lofrano & Son, Inc. stands for Frank, our father and grandfather. Speaking of pride, Frank often spoke of the time he served in a U.S. Army Infantry Division during World War II and was part of the “second wave” on D-Day in 1944, Normandy, France. Always he wondered about the little girl he saved in Sainte-Mère-Église and where her life may have taken her. Frank, along with his son Tony, went on to found our Auto Body Repair business. In June 1978, then named San Francisco Athletic Club celebrated its 60 anniversary with Frank, as President of the club along with guests Mayor George Moscone and Consul General of Italy, Paolo Mussa. During that year, Frank was able to convince members of the club--many of whom were patriotic men who also served in the war-- to reinstate the word “Italian” (which was removed from the club name during WWII) and became, as it is known today, San Francisco Italian Athletic Club.A fast out and back, the mostly flat 5 mile course starts at the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club on Washington Square Park. The course runs North from SFIAC Club Headquarters on Stockton St. to North Point to Herb Caen Way along the waterfront to Bryant St and back. There is also a two mile fun walk. Registration includes a commemorative 94th annual event T-shirt to all entrants. For the 5 mile race, trophies will be awarded to the first overall male and female runners, and the first SFIAC member. Medals are awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place men and women starting at age 10 and under, 11 - 19 and every 10 year age category up to 70+.
Post race entertainment and prize drawings for all entrants in both the 5 mile run and 2 mile fun walk will be held in the club banquet hall. Must be present to win. Race Day Registration starts at 7:45am at the SFIAC. www.sfiac.org
Sponsored by F. Lofrano & Son.
Proceeds to benefit Standup to Cancer (www.standup2cancer.org). Race/Walk rain or shine, no refunds.
In the early 80’s, Frank was UNICO National’s Man of the Year, and as such, Aaron and Josh can remember their grandfather throwing out the first pitch at a San Francisco Giants’ game at Candlestick. Frank was also a “knight” in the Knights of Columbus, another Italian-American club in San Francisco as well as Scacciapensieri Social Club.
On this 40-year milestone we at F. Lofrano & Son, Inc. pay homage to a great man with words he once wrote in his role as SFIAC club historian:
“Above all, we look back on our past with great pride; we look forward to the future with great confidence.”
