    The Marin Center for Independent Living is a 48-year-old, peer-led, community-based organization dedicated to disability rights and services. We empower individuals of all ages and abilities to participate fully in society and live with agency and dignity. Our vision is an inclusive world where all disabled people, regardless of their identities, thrive throughout their lives. As a multi-generational organization, we focus on 'whole family care' and work to create accessible, sustainable pathways for people of all ages with physical and intellectual disabilities, as well as those experiencing mental health challenges in Marin, Sonoma, Napa, and Solano Counties.

    Position Overview: The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will serve as the top leader at the Marin Center for Independent Living, leading a staff of 32 and overseeing all aspects of the organization’s operations. This role includes providing strategic direction, financial management and oversight, and day-to-day leadership to ensure the success of Marin CIL’s mission. The CEO has 5 direct reports and reports directly to the Board of Directors. The CEO's primary role is to ensure that people with disabilities have access to services and resources that help them live independently and participate fully in society. The CEO will play a central role in ensuring financial stability and both growing and improving the organization’s impact, working to expand Marin CIL's reach and effectiveness in empowering individuals with disabilities

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
    1. Strategic Leadership and Vision:
    ● Lead Marin CIL with a deep understanding and commitment to the values and principles of the Independent Living Movement of People with Disabilities, including the reasonable accommodation of consumers and staff to services that enable them to work toward the achievement of their goals.
    ● Develop and implement Marin CIL’s strategic goals and objectives.
    ● With the recent acquisition of Matrix Family Resource Center, the CEO will balance peer-led and parent-led perspectives and ensure both groups feel heard, understood, and supported.
    ● Lead the organization’s efforts in advocating for policies and services that support the independence and rights of people with disabilities and of people who are aging in place.
    ● Ensure that Marin CIL remains a forward-thinking leader in the independent living movement, adapting to changing community needs and external trends.
    ● Represent Marin CIL on the Marin Aging and Disability Institute (MADI) board.

    2. Operational and Financial Oversight:
    ● Guide the development of the strategic planning process in tandem with the Board and staff.
    ● Oversee daily operations of the organization, ensuring that programs and services are delivered effectively and efficiently.
    ● Manage and mentor the senior leadership team, including the Director of Development, Gift Advisor (contractor), Chief Strategy Officer, Director of Public Policy, and Deputy Director.
    ● Oversee developing and managing the organization’s annual budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and sustainability.
    ● Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements (federal, state, & local), including financial reporting, auditing, and tax filings.
    ● Be attentive to economic climate and financial markets to ensure the safety of the endowment.
    ● Provide regular financial reports to the Board of Directors and ensure financial accountability, transparency, and integrity.  

    3. Board Governance:
    ● Work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure effective governance and ensure the overall health of the organization.
    ● Support Board recruitment, development, and evaluation processes.
    ● Advise the Board on issues affecting the organization and the broader movements to protect the rights of persons with disabilities and older adults.

    4. Advocacy and Community Relations:
    ● Serve as the primary spokesperson for Marin CIL, representing the organization to external stakeholders, including donors, community partners, government officials, and media.
    ● Build and maintain strategic partnerships with other community organizations (especially disability service and advocacy organizations), aging services providers, and government agencies.
    ● Advocate for policies that advance the rights and opportunities of people with disabilities and older adults, both locally and at the state and federal levels.

    5. Program Development and Evaluation:
    ● Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services that promote independence and inclusion for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities.
    ● Ensure that services are culturally competent, accessible, and meet the diverse needs of the Marin, Sonoma, Napa, and Solano Counties disability community.
    ● Continuously assess and improve program quality, ensuring measurable outcomes

    6. Human Resources and Staff Development:
    ● Hire and train staff while fostering a workplace culture that supports collaboration and accountability, ensuring the team is motivated, well-supported, and committed.
    ● Set annual employee goals, provide annual reviews with direct reports, and manage the evaluation system and process for the whole staff. As part of annual reviews, encourage and provide professional development opportunities to ensure growth and alignment with organizational goals.
    ● Promote a work environment that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. Marin CIL prioritizes diversity in hiring, particularly amongst disabled communities that have been systematically overlooked. 

    7. Fundraising and Resource Development:
    ● Serve as the public face of the organization, representing Marin CIL and its mission with potential donors/funders, the media, the public, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
    ● Oversee all fundraising efforts, including donor cultivation, grant writing, corporate partnerships, private & family foundations, donor-advised funds, legacy planning, campaigns, and special events.
    ● Develop innovative funding strategies to ensure the organization's financial sustainability in collaboration with the Development Director and the Board.
    ● Strategize ways to increase Marin CIL's endowment to help make Marin CIL more financially independent.
    ● In tandem with the Development Team, develop a long-term, strategic fundraising plan with specific goals to maximize impact and usher in thoughtful strategic growth for the organization.
    ● Personally engage in fundraising efforts by cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual, corporate, foundation, and government donors in alignment with Marin CIL’s overall development strategy. 

    QUALIFICATIONS
    ● Minimum of 10 years of experience in senior leadership, including at least five years as an Executive Director/CEO of a nonprofit organization, ideally with experience in disability services.
    ● Proven success leading organizations through pivotal transitions and growth phases, with demonstrated experience overseeing internal operations such as fundraising, finance, HR, and program management.
    ● Experience managing organizations with budgets exceeding $3 million, particularly those with a blend of public and private funding streams. ● Strong understanding of the independent living movement, disability rights, aging services, and the evolving needs of individuals with disabilities, including those aging into disability.
    ● Exceptional leadership, management, and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate. ● Passion for Marin CIL’s mission and a demonstrated commitment to advancing independence, inclusion, and equity for individuals with disabilities and those who are aging into disability.
    ● Ability to travel to partner agencies and effectively communicate in person, by phone, video, or email—with customary accommodations as required by disability.
    ● Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in public health, social work, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred. 

    Salary Range: $150,000 - $175,000 DOE
    Benefits: MCIL offers a generous benefits package, comprehensive health coverage including medical, vision, and chiropractic, 70 hours of paid time off, 84 hours of sick leave annually, and 16 paid holidays. The 403(b) retirement plan includes an employer match equal to the employee's contribution, up to 4%.
