Unanimous Support for New Housing Units in Downtown San Rafael
October 08, 2019The Chamber leadership showed up to support the six-story, 120-unit downtown apartment complex proposed at 703 Third Street in San Rafael this week and was very pleased that the City Council voted unanimously on Monday in favor of the project, giving developers the green light to build the complex at 703 Third St. and 898 Lincoln Ave. The 0.63-acre site encompasses two adjacent lots that currently house a variety of businesses.
The developer, San Rafael-based Seagate Properties Inc., has touted the building as the “gateway” to downtown San Rafael. The site is adjacent to the city’s transit center and downtown SMART train station.
Joanne Webster, President and CEO wrote in a letter, 'in the past decade only ten housing units have been built in Downtown and that is a large concern. We are equally concerned about the vitality of Downtown. There are several large vacancies including the old Pizza Orgasmica building, the Fenix property, Rafael Florist and others. The proposed project will bring much needed vibrancy to the Downtown area. It is a perfect example of transit-oriented development that is being discussed at our current General Plan 2040 steering committee meetings and will provide housing for families that can live, work and shop in Downtown".
