The San Rafael Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted at their regularly scheduled Board meeting on March 25th, to endorse the preliminary plans for the Northgate Center development. The plan consists of a complete makeover for the retail space with the addition of a much-needed 1345 housing units after phase two is completed. This dynamic plan would also introduce new community spaces and an open aired retail space that would create new synergy in the neighborhood. This plan negates the 2019 Costco, and gas, plan that had earlier been proposed for the site.
“The Chamber of Commerce would like to commend Merlone Geier for listening to the community and proposing something that aligns with the neighborhood vision,” said Joanne Webster, CEO of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce. “This space is vital to the economic future of the city and will create a space where the community can live, work and play. It is very exciting.”
Over the next few months, the Chamber of Commerce will continue to monitor the project and collaborate with the developer to ensure the local business community has a voice at the table. The Chamber’s goals are not only to have a project that boosts the economy but have something that reflects the neighborhood and those living within it. “People want an outdoor experience, not malls anymore, something pedestrian friendly; a place to live, shop, dine and gather. This plan accomplishes that,” said Michele Hassid, Board Chair.
