The San Rafael Chamber of Commerce and its Board of Directors have announced their endorsements for the two open seats on the San Rafael City Council and the Division 1 Board seat on the Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD). For the San Rafael City Council, the Chamber has endorsed incumbents Maribeth Bushey in District 3, and Eli Hill for District 2. The Chamber sees these candidates as strong allies that have a history of collaboration that has improved our business climate and brought approved workforce housing to the city. For Division 1 of the MMWD Board, the Chamber has endorsed Matthew Samson, a newcomer that will bring fresh ideas and accountability to the Board.

Maribeth Bushey (District 3- City Council) has served on the Council since 2013 and her familiarity with the city and its issues are hard to match. She is an alumnus of the San Rafael Public School system and currently serves as the Strategic Blockchain Advisor with Intel, Corp. She served as an active member of her Homeowner’s Association Board (15 years), the San Rafael Planning Commission (14 years), and in a wide range of local school activities. A huge priority for her is ensuring that all San Rafael residents can be adequately housed. She is proud the Council recently commited $2.6 million to affordable housing projects. The projects include support for seniors and permanent supportive housing for the homeless. She is an advocate for the library, and a champion for San Rafael’s Climate Change Action plan and developing thoughtful, practical, sustainability programs. She is also an advocate for convenient and comfortable public transit to address traffic congestion and reduces emissions.

Eli Hill (District 2- City Council) was appointed to the Board in 2021 and has been an excellent partner to the business community and has always been extremely accessible. He has a good understanding of the local issues and often works with the Chamber to receive feedback or gather information. He has been a champion for San Rafael's working families. He would like to increase access to loans and small business resources for our locally owned and family-owned shops devastated by the pandemic and expand access to public transit. He is also a strong advocate for the construction of affordable housing units and alternative models to make San Rafael a welcoming place for young professionals and families. He would like to keep our parks and public spaces clean and safe for San Rafael’s children and families.

Matthew Samson (Division 1 -MMWD) is a San Rafael resident who attended public schools in Terra Linda where he lives now with his wife and two daughters. He is currently the Deputy Fire Chief for the South San Francisco Fire Department in San Mateo County. He brings a unique perspective, and in this role, he would focus on securing the water supply, and expanding regional partnerships to make Marin resilient to drought and wildfire. Matt instilled confidence in us that he will do the work necessary to ensure our watershed is safe for current and future generations.

The Chamber is excited to work with the individuals that make our community a more diverse and economically viable place to live. We believe that these individuals have shown incredible work ethic and leadership in their roles that have led to high quality city policy. The Chamber is looking to continue the collaboration to create a resilient, equitable and healthy economy that will benefit generations to come.
