The leadership challenge before us demands that we be informed and ready to act as community leaders, whether it be to cast a vote or run for office, volunteer for community service, or to serve on a local board or commission. 

What is the San Rafael Leadership Institute?

The San Rafael Leadership Institute is Marin’s premier leadership program for professionals who seek to hone their capacity to lead, develop a leadership vision, explore current issues, and to better understand the decision-making systems in Marin. At the heart of the program is the opportunity to experience a group of dynamic, diverse professionals from many industries and disciplines. 

The San Rafael Leadership Institute offers a singular opportunity to develop leadership and team-building skills while learning about current issues that impact Marin County. The program brings together many of Marin’s policymakers and offers participants the chance to build relationships with key stakeholders in the county. Team building is a critical component of the Institute’s leadership development philosophy. The skills achieved in this group setting, which include leadership vision, facilitated debate, and conflict resolution, are geared to assist future leaders in mastering collaboration and collective problem-solving while developing a sense of personal leadership, organizational leadership, and, finally, leadership in the community.

Throughout the San Rafael Leadership Institute, the class participates in activities and exercises that prepare them to become active community leaders who can envision community change. Many graduates are surprised to learn so much about Marin, even though they have been residents for many years or their entire life. 
 

Who Should Attend?

CEOs and CFOs, business owners and entrepreneurs, senior managers and department heads, consultants and independent contractors, nonprofit executive directors and senior staff, board chairs and directors, county and city management, and community leaders.

What is the class project?

The Class Project gives Leadership Institute participants a chance to utilize their expertise and resources to complete a project benefiting the community. The Class Project allows the class to become a "team", using both the wisdom they bring to the Institute, as well as the leadership skills and community knowledge learned during this program. The skills achieved in this group setting, which include leadership vision, facilitated debate and decision-making, are geared to assist future leaders in mastering collaboration and collective problem-solving. Established 1985 

Previous projects have included “Call Marin Home” (housing/economic security), “Bike the Blvd” (transportation options/sustainability), “Add a Meal Program,” (economic recovery/sustainability), “Spirit of Marin Utility Box Art Project” (downtown beautification), “Cleaning Up Myths about Homelessness” (education campaign/community clean-up), and “Pedal Power/Bike Fixit Station Project” (transportation options). 
 

What is the time commitment?

The all-day Leadership Institute meets once a month from October through June. Each session is held at a different and significant location in and around Marin. Please Note: Besides the one-day, monthly sessions, the time commitment includes team time to work on the Class Project. Time will vary according to the project, and while each Leadership session includes class time, extra meetings in person or on Zoom will be required to complete the project.

Session Expectations

Nine monthly sessions will occur on one Thursday each month from October through June, with the exception of orientation in October and an optional day in May. Most classes will be on the 2nd Thursday, and some will vary due to community scheduling (e.g., Spring Break). Presentation materials will be included with Session agendas or forwarded after class. Speaker’s bios and contact information will be shared. 

Graduation will be held after the last session, with families and colleagues invited to attend the celebration. 

Participants are expected to attend every session and participate in their work teams on their Class Project, which may incur outside class time, as noted above. All absences must be communicated prior to class to the Program Director or Program Chair, except for unexpected emergencies. Absences will be monitored throughout the year, and if there are questions about eligibility for graduation, it will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

San Rafael Chamber Member Tuition: $1550.00 

Non-Chamber Members Tuition $1750.00

Full payment is due by Friday, September 13, 2024 

 

Scholarship Application

Scholarships are available for eligible businesses/owners through the generous support of the Marin Leadership Foundation and a grant provided by Pacific Gas & Electric Company. All applications will be reviewed by the Marin Leadership Foundation (MLF) Board of Directors, and the recipient will be selected and notified by the MLF.
