Measure for Measure, written between 1603 and 1604, has graced the RSC stage numerous times, with various roles realised by acting luminaries John Gielgud, Dame Judi Dench, Jonathan Pryce, and Ben Kingsley, to name a few. A compelling look at abuses of power in a Vienna beset with brothels and loose morality, a young novice nun fears compromise by a corrupt official, who offers to save her imprisoned brother in exchange for sex. When she threatens to expose him, he comfortably insists no one will believe her word against his. Shakespeare’s 400-year-old work remains resonant and relevant today in this masterful production from director Gregory Doran starring Antony Byrne, James Cooney, Sandy Grierson, Lucy Phelps, and Joseph Arkley.
